The Juno-nominated Ratchet Orchestra, led by bassist, composer and organizer Nicolas Caloia, has had a long and varied history. Going back well over 20 years now, the orchestra has seen its membership at times swell up past 30, while at other times reduced to just a few. This early incarnation provides an example of the latter, with seven of the tracks recorded in Rawdon, Quebec featuring a sextet, which increases to a tentet for two tracks recorded in Montreal. The music defies easy classification. There are elements of modern classical in both the textures and arrangements, and jazz flavouring in the occasional wind or bass solos as found on the title track. In other places African influenced drumming dominates, while other tracks provide more delicate moments as small percussive elements come to the fore. Overall the music is highly varied and original, constantly shifting and not falling comfortably into any genre (although an exception occurs with the concluding track, which is indeed a jazz-like processional march). These recordings provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Ratchet Orchestra, providing hints of what was to come later in the larger ensembles.
