This 2013 set from the by now long running In the Sea trio is proof that their style was established early on. Sawing strings swing, rollick, and romp through the opening section before a more melancholic mood sets in. By the seven minute mark the quiet seas have turned turbulent, and one can sense the waves rocking the deck. Sprinkled along the rest of the opening 24 minute track are many moments of quiet melody, either by cellist Tristan Honsinger or violinist Joshua Zubot, always solidly underpinned by bassist Nicolas Caloia. The tranquil movements are interrupted by more frantic interludes of heavily syncopated bowing, not in unison but tight in their asynchronous interlocking dissonance. In other places pointillistic plucking predominates before sailing back into more peaceful waters. Recorded as part of Montreal’s Le Cagibi long running Mardi Spaghetti improvisation series, it is nice to have this previously unreleased gem finally docking here.
