about

Café Résonance, Montréal - November 29 2014

Double bassist Nicolas Caloia is a man of many musical hats, which, when you think of it, is not that unusual for those who play his instrument. Like many eminent predecessors and contemporaries ranging from Mingus to Holland and Guy, he too is an organizer who makes things happen by putting together bands of all kinds, from pocket-size duos and trios to large groups like his own Ratchet Orchestra, for whom he composes the bulk of its repertoire. But whatever the musical context may be, improvisation is still the driving force behind them all, the more open the better. A good example of this is the present group Stilll. In this live date ca 2014 both he, altoist Yves Charuest and drummer Valsamis were joined by violinist Josh Zubot, not too long before his move away from Montreal to Vancouver. While it is best to let the music speak for itself, suffice to say that the four players connect pretty quickly over the course of these two lengthy but never longish workouts. The pairing of alto sax and violin is particularly effective, their matching ranges enabling the players to establish a tight weave of ideas, and likewise for their partners.
