Uncertainty Series : Never Ending Books, New Haven June 10 2017

It is common for improvising ensembles to condense into smaller units during a concert, but here is a full half-hour set of two of the three members of the In The Sea string trio, cellist and vocalist Tristan Honsinger and bassist Nicolas Caloia. This intense set was recorded live at Never Ending Books, a tiny hip venue in the Goatsville area of New Haven, Connecticut, providing the community with free multimedia materials and concerts. While titled “Uncertainty” the music is highly coherent and often sounds composed. The set runs through a series of connected segments ranging all over the stylistic map, from gruff almost-pop moments based around weird utterings from Honsinger, to a free jazz style bass solo from Caloia, along with many soaring moments of galloping strings. Those familiar with the In The Sea recordings will find many similarities despite the absence of the third member, violinist Joshua Zubot. The occasion provides an opportunity to concentrate on the interactions of the two lower register strings, a distinct pleasure.
