Serie Mardi Spaghetti : Le Cagibi, Montreal October 13, 2013

This recording provides an excellent opportunity to delve into the effect that a single change in personnel might have on a longstanding trio playing freely improvised music. Violinist Joshua Zubot and double bassist Nicolas Caloia are two thirds of the In The Sea trio, well documented in several outstanding concerts on these pages and in other CD and cassette releases. In this 2015 recording from the long running Mardi Spaghetti series of improvised evenings, the third In The Sea member, cellist Tristan Honsinger, is replaced by Yves Charuest on alto saxophone. Would this change result in a completely different approach, or will there be some continuity or borrowing of approaches from the other trio? The answer is in the music, and one hears both possibilities present in this concert. The soaring, sawing and swirling melodic lines from the In The Sea strings remain, while the dadaist mutterings and whimsical musings of Honsinger have been replaced by more cerebral circular melodic cells from Charuest. The results are in part familiar and in part different, but surely equally enthralling.
