about

Recorded at the La Sotterenea February 26 2020.
Last gig before Covid 19 lockdown.

La Sotterenea is located in Montreal's Mile End district, well known for its burgeoning and creative arts scene. The venue is a small windowless basement room, the perfect setting for intimate concerts of freely improvised music. Bassist Nic Caloia covers a wide range of styles, from complex compositions for his large ensembles, to completely improvised duos like the one we have here. Guitarist Rainer Weins tends to avoid playing straight lines or chords, preferring the textures created by preparing his guitar with various implements stuck between the strings (see photo above). He is also a master of rhythm, as is amply demonstrated by his kalimba playing which starts this concert, while Caloia bows in the background. This is followed by textures ranging from gentle wisps to clanging bells and other sounds not expected from two stringed instruments. The result is an engaging and varied half hour.
