about

Recorded at Dobialab June 4, 2018
Staranzano, Italy

Derek Bailey subtitled his 1980 book "Musical Improvisation" with the phrase "...the most widely practiced and least documented aspect of music." In the 40 years since then, high quality inexpensive recording equipment and digital distribution begat a flood of recordings of improvised music, within which floats this previously unreleased gem by "In The Sea."

Cellist and vocalist Tristan Honsinger has been there almost since the beginning, and in fact his first major recording was a duo with Derek Bailey back in 1976. While the trio is completed by two younger musicians, their collective experience is as extensive as Honsinger's. Nic Caloia leads both large and small ensembles through composed and improvised works (check out the many other recordings on these pages!), and Joshua Zubot on violin has been a very active participant in the Vancouver and Montreal music scenes.

While the music is as varied as most improvised music concerts, the three strings tend to swirl around each other. The overall effect, as implied by their name, is much like being lost at sea. Interrupted and spurred on by dadaist chants from Honsinger, there is much inventiveness and energy here, not to mention fine playing from all.
