The Lost Letter
Is it a list of losses, a tune of triumph, or tales of searing sadness and squinting eyes made dense with stoic witnessing?
So much past behind us, yet it is so alive in me.
Our lettered souls, fractured into isolation, yet embroidered with the silk of our blood that fastens us together since dawn-less time.
The long-lost letter on the dresser…
A ghost must have found it, put it there long after I stopped looking for it
at the bottom of purses: my mothers, my aunts, my own.
Leather petals peeled open, garish mouths.
Fingers curling around nothing but wishes.
Elbow deep, yet blind, I am.
Shouldering the weight of origins, shifting it left right left again,
one foot, another, shoulders sinking. Hopes turning grey.
In closets, empty hangers rattle
against one, the other, chattering teeth of ghosts.
The long-lost letter on the dresser.
I don’t dare open it. What could it possibly tell me now
that I haven’t already learned through exigent living?
I prefer to imagine its contents are not a letter at all,
that sliding open the soft palms of the envelope
would be a balm for any and all ailments of the body and heart.
Two hands gently holding each side of my face saying
“Yes. Yes. Yes. You are mine, my love.”
