about

Presented by Curated at the Spill,
Peterborough, Ontario - September 23 2015

If nothing else, the 2020 pandemic has provided artists with the opportunity to catch up on projects one never previously found the time to complete. This included many who reached into their cache of unreleased recordings to finally bring them to light. The In the Sea trio includes Joshua Zubot on violin, Nicolas Caloia on bass and Tristan Honsinger on cello, three experienced string players who are able to make their improvisations sound pre-planned, with more tonal passages and less atonal noise compared to many other improvising ensembles. This set recorded in Peterborough, Ontario is from a 2015 Canadian tour. This music starts out with the trio in modern classical mode, but covers much ground in the ensuing 50 minutes. Nonsensical poetry interludes from Honsinger often interrupts the flow to send the trio off in new directions, sometimes encouraging sputterings that match the vocals, other times a more pastoral passage or upward spirals that reach for the sky. This work is on par with previously released In the Sea recordings, and an excellent way to spend some of the extra time we have these days.
